Update on what I'm doing...

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m a bad girl. I hadn’t updated this page in almost a year, but I have a good excuse, really I do. I have been working around the clock churning out books. I guess I’ll start with my latest endeavor. My first non-fiction book hit the stands this week. It’s called Help! I’ve Turned into My Mother. I wrote this book because, well, I’ve turned into my mother. And the more I talked to my girlfriends, I found, I’m not alone. I hope you’ll enjoy my stories, all the contributing writers (much love to that talented bunch) and the sound professional advice. My mom isn’t too thrilled with the book because she’s a very private person and doesn’t like me “telling the whole world our business!”

Next up, is my third novel, I Know I’ve Been Changed. I had so much fun with that one because I got to draw on all my crazy relatives (What? Don’t act like you don’t have none.) That book will be out Feb. 1, but of course, you can always pre-order your copy today! Saying I’m blessed is an understatement. In addition to those two books, I have an anthology coming out in July 2006 called Have a Little Faith, written with Jacqueline Thomas, Sandra Kitt and J.D. Mason. You’ll definitely want to check that out as well. I have also signed on to do an inspirational teen series and I am so loving that because there is such a need for uplifting fiction for our young people.

And I’m still promoting Let the Church Say Amen, which by the way, hit the #1 spot on the Essence Magazine Bestseller’s list and spent many months on the Black Issues Book Review Bestsellers list. I’ve been traveling the country, participating in festivals and conferences and meeting with bookclubs, so it’s been one busy year.

By the way, you may have noticed a cover change on my debut novel, My Brother’s Keeper. It’s the same book, just a different cover and it still remains one of my favorites.

Writing reality…

Let me send a message to the holy rollers – those of you who send me the emails blasting me because I have MILD profanity in my books and my characters are flawed. Number one, I prefer to be called an Inspirational writer for that very reason (actually it’s inspirational, with an edgeJ). Number two, I write reality and in the real world some Christians do say bad words, do bad things and (gasp) have sex. Even more so, in the world I live in, everybody ain’t a Christian. My current writing reflects all of that. You won’t get any down and dirty, knockin’ over furniture sex, graphic violence and excessive profanity, but you will see everyday people struggling in their walks with God and using faith to see them through. I write stories of faith. And let’s just put it this way, I don’t write anything I wouldn’t want my mother to read. (Well, except for I Know I’ve Been Changed, which she didn’t care for, because again – well, let’s just say she saw some of our people in the pages).

What I'm writing now...

You asked for it, now you’ve got it! A sequel to Let the Church Say Amen. In Everybody Say Amen, Rachel is back and married to Lester, who takes over as pastor of Zion Hill. So you know what that means, Rachel is now the First Lady. And if you know like I know, Rachel is no ordinary First Lady. This book will be a blast! I’m also working on the teen books, three of them are scheduled for release in the next year and a half.

Bringing out the writer in you...

I have to keep this part in here about how I am a testament to why you should not let anyone but you determine your destiny. I see it so much, writers waiting on that big break, the call from a major publisher or agent. When I first completed My Brother's Keeper, I shopped it around-and got the standard rejections. So I stepped out on faith and self-published. I armed myself with the necessary tools (research, money, patience and perseverance) and I set out to accomplish my dreams and experienced insurmountable success, which later led to a book deal. Had I sat and waited for someone to validate my work, I might still be waiting. I always tell people when I'm out speaking, when one door closes, find another way in. If you knew a $230 million dollar lottery ticket was sitting inside an office building, and could be yours if you could just get to it, but the front door was locked solid, I'd be willing to bet you'd find a way in. If you had to dig a tunnel, saw a hole in the roof and drop in, you'd get to that ticket. Take that same approach to realizing your dreams, whether it's writing or anything else. Find some way, any way, to make your dreams come true. If I can be of any assistance on your publishing journey, feel free to drop me an email. And if you're stuck in a writer's rut, then my advice to you would be to just write. Even if it doesn't make sense, even if you're not feeling it, get it out. You can always go back and clean it up later. But by all means, just do it.

Thank you all for your support...and please pass the word, not the book!

Blessings,

ReShonda

    Hello Ms. ReShonda,

I read your story in four degress and you had me hooked every since. I've read Let the church say amen and today (Christmas morning) just finished reading your first book My brother's keeper. I still can't believe that this was your first books. This story line was so real and in it's own way very insirational regarding forgiveness. I usually don't email authors but this book touched me in the heart regarding my own life with my sperm donor parents. I still have a long way to go with forgiveness involving my parents but your book opened up my heart. Your books are down to earth and yes, some christians do have sex, drink and use modest profanity. I guess this is why I like your books because they are so real to life and I can truly identify with some of the stories. Thank U. I Look forward to reading your next books. I have recently learned of your writing. Your books seem very interesting. I will be making a trip to my local bookstore to read your work. I can tell they are very good. Even the summaries have served as an inspiration to me. Keep up the good work, Soror.

Hi, ReShonda. My name is Chandra Vallie-Yarber and I am a big fan. I have to tell you, I am just in such great awe of all you have done and continue to do, especially holding down two great careers and taking care of your family. It did my heart so good to see you the first time on 26 and then to see your picture on the back of Let the Church Say Amen. I really enjoyed the book.
I am a member of the CPT book club, but could not make it to the meeting last year when you met with us. I was glad to be able to make it and have you sign my book on last Friday. I called everyone I could think of from Dowling MS to let them know about your books! There are two other things I want to share with you: First, my older daughter mentioned I needed to get a book she'd seen called Help! I've Turned Into My Mother, because she feared her mom was turning into her granny - and then I see that you are the author of the book. I'll definitely purchase it - more for her, than for me. I have accepted the inevitable and have even begun to embrace it! :-)
Lastly, my youngest daughter has been writing stories and desingning and selling jewelry since she was in the fourth grade and she is really talented. I shared with her the story you told us Friday night about your fifth grade writing "adventure" and your very colorful imagination. I reaffirmed to her my commitment and support to her success in all her positive endeavours. Who knows, perhaps there wil be many young girls springing forth from your shadows to follow in your path. Many blessings to you and yours.
    Wishing you enough, Chandra

He said it is a good read as well. I would like to commend you on your good works. Keep it up! You are truly blessed as well as being a blessing (through your books).

I must admit your writing is what we need today dear. I mean it's happening by the second the things that I have read throughout your page and your novel. I must admit where it's starting at is in the Church. Not everyone but majority. All can be done is prayer and what you write is to be reality that's what's wrong to much sugar coating and not accepting that the things you writing about are happening. Continue to help me I'm a 30 year old single woman striving and I tell you it's not easy. i do know once onemind is up then things happen. Keep your focus sista there will always be someone to down your work and disagree but know that as long as it touch the heart of at least one you have done and served a great purpose. You inspire me as ablack woman. I'm a black single mom at that and I desire a lot but and I need a mentor or model such as yourself that keeps it REAL! I know the mothers of the church are helpers but keep up the good work! God Bless YOU! We know right from wrong yes but God is the judge and please let HIm direct and guide you!

    Hi Reshonda
    I love your books!
I am in San Antonio, and the problem with this city is we don't get many people to come here for workshops or book signings. I am working to try and change that. I love your writing style and I own Four Degrees of Heat. I was shocked to see Have a little faith.
I must get that one to add to my ReShaonda Collection. I have purchased many of your books for
friends as gifts. I am starting a women's bookclub soon, so I know we will be reading you. As a part of the literacy program I am joining forces with, your teen books will realy come in handy. Thank you for keeping it real in your literature. As an aspiting writer I can't tell you how how much the issue of dealing with Christians is the content in the book. Thanks for being you.
    Talk to you soon
    Vicki

I love your books, I've read the Pastor's Wife, Let the Church say Amen, and I just finished Everybody Say Amen. I must say that Everybody Say Amen kind of left me in awe the way it just ended like it did. I was wondering how long will it take you to write a sequel so I know what happens to Mary, Lester, Rachel and the babies. I am so invested in these stories now you just can't leave me hanging on the edge of my seat like this. However I must say to get me so engrossed in a book you are without a doubt a very blessed and talented writer. May God continue to bless you in your craft and in all that you do.

    Hello Reshonda:

I just finished reading the book "Let The Church Say Amen".I have read several of your books and I especially enjoy reading about Houston, Texas. I used to live in Houston and I miss it so... much. I was also a member of a book club there. I read your acknowledgement section in "Everybody Say Amen" and kudos to the First Ladies who you mention. I used to be a member of Brentwood Baptist Church and I think Doris's name is spelled "Ratliff". I think everybody always want to add to that name. Again, I have enjoyed your books and please keep on writing and I will keep on enjoying.
    thanks
    jmare
